Hi there, fellow empty nester! If you're feeling a bit lost or down now that the kids have left home, you're definitely not alone. It's a big adjustment, and it’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of emotions. This feeling has a name: Empty Nester Syndrome. Let’s chat about how to recognise it and, more importantly, how to cope and then thrive in this new chapter of life. Here are seven tips to help you get started:

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s okay to feel sad or even a little lost. Give yourself permission to feel these emotions without judgment. Know that you will move through them and in time you will feel better. Please see this BLOG POST to realise the STAGES OF GRIEF you will pass through.

2. Recognise the Symptoms

Are you experiencing a lack of purpose, loneliness, or sadness? These are common signs of Empty Nester Syndrome. Awareness is the first step to managing it. Be intentional with your actions and you will find new purpose. For more help read this BLOG POST

3. Talk About It

Sharing your feelings with friends, a partner, or a support group can be incredibly therapeutic. You’re not alone, and talking can make a big difference. Journaling is also fantastic when our emotions get too much. When we write them down on paper, we are getting them out of our head. It is a release which helps us to move forward. 4. Stay Connected

Just because your kids aren’t at home doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. Regular phone calls, video chats, and visits can help bridge the distance. Be sure to keep up your family traditions. Read here.

5. Rediscover Old Passions

Remember those hobbies and interests you once loved but set aside? Now’s the perfect time to dive back in. Whether it’s gardening, painting, or dancing, find joy in what you love.

6. Try Something New

Challenge yourself to learn something new. It could be a cooking class, a new fitness routine, or even a travel adventure. New experiences can bring excitement and purpose to your new stage of life. Use our Guide to Live an Intentional Life to find your new purpose.

7. Focus on Your Health

Physical and mental health are crucial. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation can improve your overall well-being. If you are not already practising self-care, start now.

This phase of life is an opportunity for self-discovery and growth. It's okay to miss the kids, but it’s also a chance to focus on you. Embrace this time with an open heart and mind. The best years are still ahead, and they’re filled with potential and possibilities. Let’s turn Empty Nester Syndrome into a journey of self-rediscovery and joy! Let’s work on your mindset together and ensure that your years ahead are filled with intentional purpose.
