A PURPOSEFUL LIFE
Jane Victoria Hide

Hi there, pre-empty nesters! As you approach this significant milestone in your life, it's natural to have a million thoughts swirling around in your head. But fear not! By asking yourself some key questions and taking proactive steps, you can prepare for the empty nest with confidence and grace. Here we go:
1. What Are My Expectations for the Empty Nest?
Take a moment to reflect on your expectations for this next chapter. Are you excited for more freedom and independence, or feeling anxious about the quiet house? Understanding your expectations can help you navigate the transition more smoothly. I found journaling was a huge help at this stage. It helped me get my thoughts out of my head, which in turn gave them more clarity. If you are not all ready journaling, check out our Seven Reasons to Embrace Journaling BLOG POST here.
2. How Will My Relationship with My Children Change?
Consider how your relationship with your children might evolve once they leave home. Will you communicate less frequently, or become closer in different ways? Keeping an open line of communication with your kids can help ease the transition for everyone. Download our Tips to keep connected with your adult children BLOG POST here.
3. What Will I Do with My Free Time?
With fewer responsibilities at home, you'll likely find yourself with more free time on your hands. Think about how you'll fill that time—will you pursue hobbies, travel, or focus on personal development? Embrace this opportunity to explore new passions and interests. 4. How Can I Prepare Emotionally for the Empty Nest?
Acknowledge and validate your emotions as you prepare for the empty nest. It's okay to feel a mix of excitement, sadness, and everything in between. Find healthy ways to cope with your emotions, whether it's talking to a friend, journaling, or practicing self-care. I have always told my girls to share their emotions. They are better out than being kept in. If you don't want to share them, journal them. There are many benefits of journaling. Download The Abundant Nest Journal here.
5. What Changes Do I Need to Make in My Home?
Consider how your home will change once the kids are gone. Will you repurpose their bedrooms, downsize, or renovate? Start thinking about any changes you want to make to create a space that reflects your evolving needs and lifestyle. This may feel callous while they are still at home, but involving them in this process shows them that you are content with the transition and that you are happy for their growing independence. Which is what we want them to believe.
6. How Can I Support My Children in Their Transition?
Your children may also be experiencing a mix of emotions as they prepare to leave home. How can you support them during this transition? Offer a listening ear, provide practical advice, and reassure them that you'll always be there for support, no matter the distance. You could also suggest journaling to them. Or to write a letter from their future self, thanking them for being brave and taking the huge step of leaving home.
7. What Goals Do I Have for Myself in This Next Chapter?
Finally, think about your goals and aspirations for this next chapter of life. What do you want to accomplish? Whether it's traveling, furthering your education, or focusing on personal growth, set goals that excite and inspire you for the empty nest years ahead.
