In today's digital age, many of us find ourselves working from home, especially empty nesters; it seems to be the thing to do. While the convenience of remote work is undeniable, it can sometimes leave us feeling isolated from the social interactions we once enjoyed in the workplace. But fear not! There are plenty of ways for empty nesters to expand their social networks from the comfort of their home office.

Tips for empty nesters who work from home

Firstly, leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to connect with old colleagues, join professional groups, and participate in industry discussions. These platforms aren't just for sharing memes and family photos – they're powerful tools for networking and staying connected with peers. When we moved countries, Facebook was fabulous for staying connected with family. After setting everything up, I subsequently found, and was contacted by, old school and work friends. It was great to reconnect after all those years.

Another tip is to explore virtual networking events and webinars relevant to your field or interests. Many organisations now host online gatherings where professionals can network, share ideas, and even attend workshops or seminars. We recently attended an online Tony Robbins event. Not only was it empowering and allowed personal growth, we connected with other like minded people who we have subsequently stayed in touch with.

Don't underestimate the power of online communities and forums. Whether it's a hobby group, a book club, or a local neighbourhood forum, these online spaces offer opportunities to meet like-minded individuals and forge new connections. Search for your favourite activity online and see what is available. If there isn’t one, you could set one up. Then you decide whether it’s online or in person. You could also try MeetUp.Com. They have some fantastic options.

Lastly, don't hesitate to reach out to former co-workers or acquaintances for virtual coffee chats or catch-ups. Sometimes a simple message saying, "Hey, it's been a while! Let's catch up over Zoom" can lead to meaningful conversations and rekindled connections. If you are feeling lonely, there’s a good chance that others are too.

Working from home as an empty nester doesn't mean sacrificing social interaction. By utilising social media, attending virtual events, joining online communities and reaching out to old contacts, you can expand your social network and cultivate meaningful relationships – all from the comfort of your home office. So, get out there (virtually) and start networking! Start with The Abundant Nest Facebook Group.
